How I got a 9.0 in the TMUA in a third of the time
In October 2024 I got a 9.0 in the TMUA. Two weeks of prep, TMUA and nothing else, ~18 hours a day, and I made a stupid number of mistakes along the way.
Honestly? I think I could've done it in less.
It's possible. And there is no reason it can't be you.
If you're sitting there thinking:
- Getting a 9.0 from scratch in under a week is impossible.
- These people must be geniuses.
- I'll just settle for whatever the average cutline is for my course.
The reason isn't that you're special. It's that everyone taking this thing are mostly in a similar situation with similar maths backgrounds, and are dealt with the same resources of the same tiny pile of past papers, and almost none of them are studying maths properly. That's the whole gap. That's where the 9.0 lives.
The advice everyone parrots is just complete bullshit
You've heard the nebulous advice a thousand times:

- • Do as much maths as possible
- • Do past papers and you'll be fine
- • Active Recall! Build Flashcards!
WHY THIS IS JUST TERRIBLE ADIVCE
- • Everyone has the same 20 ish papers. If papers alone worked, everyone would 9.0 this test
- • Volume with no extraction is just a random walk
- • Flashcards memorise facts. The TMUA tests proper sequential thinking, you need to prepare different than you did for A levels. You cannot flashcard judgement.
It's all semi true-ish without practicality, because it circles around the thing that actually matters instead of naming it. So I'm going to name it.
The one crucial thing nobody tells you:model answers have no visible WHY
When you bake a cake, you follow a recipe. When you build a Lego set, you follow the manual. The step-by-step is right there in front of you.
When you look at the recipe in maths which is the model answer/answer sheet, it doesn't give you that. And this is so fucking important: there is no concretely visual process. I mean yeah, there's an answer sheet. But the answer sheet shows you what they did, which is the sequence of operations from question to result. What it never shows is the WHY, the reason behind it was natural to do that.
You've felt this. You stare at a question, you've got no idea, you crack the answer sheet open out of frustration, and it turns out the model answer thought of something you just… didn't. So your two jobs are:
- Compartmentalise the process into smaller steps.
- Extract the WHY behind each step.
Zombie math vs WHY math
When I started, I made one of two mistakes every single time I hit a wall:
Zombie math
- Get emotional. "How the fuck did they think of this? They must be a genius." Spiral.
- Skim the answer. Nod. "Yeah okay I get it." Move on.
Why math
- Stay flat. Ask: which bit of information opened that route, and how do I emulate it?
- Interrogate the answer. Find the decision point. Re-derive it from scratch.
I'm not above this, by the way. I still catch myself doing the genius-spiral thing more than I'd like (lmfao). The difference now is I notice it and kill it fast instead of letting it run.
Don't get sloppy. Make your thinking explicit.
This sounds vague but it's true for the TMUA and for every STEM subject once you're inside a top university:
Don't get sloppy with your thought process. Make it clear.
Here's what sloppy looks like. You're mid-problem, you hit a wall, and your brain goes fuzzy — "so on and so forth," "and then something like that," "yeah it basically works out." When you're talking to your bros, fine, I do this too. But in maths? Never. The hand-wave IS the failure.
The fix is brutal and simple: force every step into an exact, written, defensible line. No "obviously." No "it follows that." Write the actual next line and be able to defend why it's allowed.
And here's why this isn't just study-hygiene — it's the exact thing Paper 2 is built to punish. Paper 2 is mathematical reasoning: logic and proof, necessary vs sufficient conditions, converse, contrapositive, spotting the flaw in an argument. None of that is on your A-level. Precision is the whole game.
