HOW TO SCORE 9.0 ON THE TMUA
the method, stated plainly, from a verified 9.0

This note is the method behind that, written out. No preparation can promise anyone a score, and nothing here promises one. What follows is a description of the work, which is the only part that transfers.
THE SCORE IS AN AVERAGE, SO START WITH THE WEAKER PAPER
The overall TMUA score is the average of Paper 1 and Paper 2. That single fact determines where your time should go.
A candidate at 8.5 and 6.0 averages 7.25, below a flat pair of 7.5s. One point found on the weaker paper is worth half a point overall, and it is far cheaper to find than two tenths at the top of a paper you have already trained.
For most candidates the weaker paper is Paper 2, because reasoning about statements is not something A-level teaching drills. So the first strategic decision is usually to spend the majority of remaining time on the paper that feels least like mathematics.
SIT ONE PAPER COLD BEFORE PLANNING ANYTHING
Do not read about preparation before you have a real measurement. Without one, every plan is written about an imagined weakness.
Sit one official paper in a single 75 minute block, no calculator, phone elsewhere, and write the clock time next to each question as you finish it. The timing log matters as much as the marks.
Then mark it blind against the official key, before reading any solution. The temptation to read the model answer first is the single most expensive habit in TMUA preparation, because it converts your only honest test into a worked example.
CLASSIFY EVERY ERROR INTO ONE OF FOUR KINDS
Knowledge: the identity, fact or definition was not known. Fix by learning it, once, and moving on. This is the smallest category for most strong candidates.
Method: the content was known but the route taken was longer than the intended one. This is where most of the missing score sits. Fix by writing a rule, not by practising more.
Execution: a sign, a dropped term, a misread bound, a transcription error into the answer grid. Fix with a checking habit, for example re-reading the question stem after choosing an option.
Time: the question was solvable and was never reached. Fix with a triage rule about when to abandon, not by trying to work faster.
These four have four unrelated fixes. A paper reviewed without the classification almost always receives the wrong correction, which is why so much practice produces so little movement.
TURN MODEL ANSWERS INTO RULES
Read model answers for the route, never for the answer. For each question you got wrong or slow, write one line in the form when I see X, do Y.
Real examples of the shape: when a question asks for one coefficient, do not expand the whole binomial. When a cubic has no obvious factor, test the sign at the option endpoints instead of solving. When a trigonometric equation is quadratic in a single ratio, substitute before touching identities. When a Paper 2 statement claims something is always true, spend ten seconds on zero, one, a negative and an equal pair before believing it.
Keep every rule in one running document. Read it before each new paper. By week eight, that document, not the papers, is your preparation.

TRAIN PAPER 2 AS READING BEFORE TRAINING IT AS SPEED
Take ten reasoning questions untimed. For each one, write in words what the statement claims and what would falsify it, before looking at the options. Decide the type of claim first: for all, there exists, if then, if and only if.
Only after that writing becomes automatic should the clock go back on. Speed on Paper 2 comes from precision of reading, and adding pressure to imprecise reading just produces confident wrong answers faster.
Learn the standard traps cold: a converse is not an equivalence, a single counterexample defeats a universal claim, necessary is not sufficient, and an argument can reach a true conclusion through an invalid step.
THE LAST FORTNIGHT, AND THE DAY
In the final two weeks, stop adding material. Sit full pairs back to back at the time of day your centre will sit you, and spend the rest of the time re-reading your own rules and redoing only questions you previously got wrong.
On the day: there is no negative marking, so every blank is strictly worse than a guess, and the last two minutes of each paper belong to filling in anything unanswered. Take a first pass answering only what is quick and mark whatever you abandon. Both papers are equally weighted, so treat the second one as half your result rather than as an epilogue.
None of this is complicated. It is narrow, finite work done in the right order, which is why it is available to anyone willing to mark their own paper honestly.
